A large dark brown and off-white coloured fly with white / translucent tipped wings, which were otherwise brown or brown-translucent (photos 1 & 3). It spent time hovering over flowers, with rapid wing movements which made the white tips of wings very noticeable (photo 5). The underbelly appeared mostly pale cream (photo 4), and at certain angles, the upper and lower surfaces of the abdomen appeared somewhat flat (photos 3 & 5), though not so much from the side (photo 2). The eyes were dark brown and large (photos 1 & 2) and the upper thorax surface appeared hairy (photo3). Not sure whether this falls into the ‘Hoverfly’ category, but its behaviour was suggestive of that. This may be the same Sp. as that at sighting 4672629 which was visiting the same flowers, (Common mint), in the same pot, as this one was. These 2 sightings were about a fortnight apart.
